PRELIMINARY SWIM EVALUATION

Before a child can participate in any Nipper's event, they must complete the Preliminary Skills Evaluation.

To maintain safety and lifesaving standards, SLSA has set a minimum level of proficiency that Nipper members must achieve before being eligible to compete in carnivals.

Children will have the opportunity to complete their Competition Skills Evaluation during the first few weeks of Nippers.  

It's important that all Nippers complete their respective swims every year for their respective Age Groups as the following rules apply:

  • "No Water Activities for Nippers with No Proficiency Swims Completed"  and
  • "No Sand or Water Competition for Competitors with No Competition Swim Evaluations Completed"

  • 1 1/2 minutes survival float
  • 200 metre swim (Freestyle within 6 min)
  • Minimum 150m Open water swim within 10min
  • Surf Safe One

  • 150 metre swim (Freestyle only)
  • 2 minutes survival float
  • 200 metre swim (Freestyle within 5 min)
  • Minimum 288m Open water swim within 15min
  • Surf Safe Two
  • CPR Certificate

Under 12
  • 150 metre swim (Freestyle only)
  • 2 minutes survival float
  • 200 metre swim (Freestyle within 5 min)
  • Minimum 288m Open water swim within 15min
  • Surf Smart One
  • CPR (if not already achieved) and Basic Emergency Care

Under 13
  • 200 metre swim (Freestyle only)
  • 3 minutes survival float
  • 200 metre swim (Freestyle within 5 min)
  • Minimum 288m Open water swim within 15min
  • Surf Smart Two
  • CPR and Basic Emergency Care (if not already achieved)

Under 14
  • 200 metre swim (Freestyle, in less than 5 minutes)
  • 3 minutes survival float
  • 200 metre swim (Freestyle within 5 min)
  • Minimum 288m open water swim within 10min
  • SRC (Surf Rescue Certificate)

Notes

Every junior member competing in branch & state competition must have completed the preliminary & competition evaluation swims & received the appropriate surf education award

 

This must be completed for the relevant age group before being able to compete at surf carnivals

The relevant age surf education awards must be completed each season prior to 31st December 2019 and meet the 80% attendance requirement. Talk to your age manager about absences.
