Special Kids Program:
Surf Education Program for People with
Disabilities
Maroubra SLSC in conjunction with
their Lifesaving partners Maroubra Seals Sports and Community Club is
conducting a surf education program for people with disabilities.
The program is designed for children
with physical and intellectual disabilities with the aim of having fun
while learning about beach and water safety.
The participants will learn all
aspects of beach safety from Maroubra Surf Lifesaving Clubs volunteer
lifesavers.
The activities include theory and
physical activity components.
The theory will cover a basic
understanding of waves, rips, tides, why we swim between the flags and
what a lifesavers role is.
The physical activities will include
some of the traditional events that lifesavers and nippers undertake.
These events include beach flags, sprints and sprint relays, wading
events in shallow water. They have been modified to suit a team
environment and needs.
These events are designed to enhance
the knowledge, coordination, skill and confidence of all participants.
The program will run on Saturday’s starting from mid
October. There is no cost to the program and infrastructure for program
has been sponsored by the Maroubra Seals Sports and Community club.
I am sure you and your child will
enjoy the upcoming program and the information that they receive will be
worthwhile for all your trips to the beach.
