There are many awards available to help develop lifesaving skills, and many courses come with nationally recognised qualifications that can be used in the workplace outside of Surf Lifesaving.

Advanced Lifesaving Awards

Silver Medallion Aquatic Rescue

The Silver Medallion Aquatic Rescue course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to participate in search and rescue operations. 

 Prerequisites include that you:

  • Are a financial member of Maroubra Surf Club
  • Be at least 16 years of age on the date of assessment
  • Hold and be proficient in the Bronze Medallion
  • Complete a 400 metre swim in 8 minutes of less in a pool of no less than 25m

Silver Medallion Aquatic Rescue Syllabus 

Gold Medallion

The Gold Medallion equips participants with the advanced skills needed to perform a complex patient rescue and patient care. This award sets a benchmark for fitness and endurance, and meets the minimum requirements for work in the professional lifeguard industry.

Prerequisites include that you:

  • Are a financial member of Maroubra Surf Club
  • Be at least 17 years of age on the date of assessment
  • Hold and be proficient in the following awards:
    • Bronze Medallion
    • Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate
    • Silver Medallion Beach Management
    • Provide First Aid (HLTAID011)
  • Have capacity to complete in one day:
    • An 800 m swim in under 14 minutes in an open-water course not more than 400 m in length, or a swimming pool of no less than 25 m in length, unaided and in freestyle.
    • A mission test of a 400 m swim, 800 m run, 400 m board paddle, 800 m run in under 25 minutes
    • A tube rescue of an unconscious patient 100 m out at sea
    • A board rescue of a novice swimmer 200 m out at sea
    • A complex patient rescue, including selecting equipment, returning patient to shore and treating patient appropriately and completing post operational requirements.

Emergency Care Awards

Resuscitation

This course will provide participants with the skills and knowledge to provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation to an adult, child or infant.  The course content is based on the policies and standards of the Australian Resuscitation Council, upon successful completion participants will receive a nationally recognised statement of attainment for the unit of competency HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Prerequisites include that you:

  • Are a financial member of Maroubra Surf Club
  • Be at least 10 years of age on the date of assessment

Resuscitation Certificate Syllabus 

First Aid

The Provide First Aid course (HLTAID011) provides participants with the skills and knowledge to manage emergency first aid situations until professional medical support arrives.  Upon successful completion, participants will receive a nationally recognised statement of attainment for the following units of competency:

  • HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • HLTAID010 - Provide basic emergency life support
  • HLTAID011 - Provide First Aid

The Provide First Aid course is nationally recognised WorkCover approved training. This course runs over one full day or two evenings, and approximately 1 hour of online learning. This course is a prerequisite for completing the Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate.

  • Be at least 14 years of age on the day of assessment

Advanced Resuscitation Techniques (ART)

This course will help you develop skills and knowledge in managing life-threatening external bleeding, the use of oxygen, airway management devices and automated external defibrillators during resuscitation, and to administer oxygen to conscious or unconscious victims. Upon successful completion participants will receive a nationally recognised statement of attainment for the unit of competency HLTAID015 - Provide advanced resuscitation and oxygen therapy.

Prerequisites include:

  • A financial member of Maroubra Surf Club
  • Be at least 15 years of age on the date of assessment
  • hold a current unit of competency HLTAID011 Provide first aid

Beach Management Awards

Radio Operator Certificate

This course will help you develop skills and knowledge to effectively operate communications systems and equipment in our local lifesaving environment. The award is designed for members who are either working towards obtaining their Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue) or members who wish to contribute to radio operations in their local clubs without completing the full qualification.

Prerequisites include that you:

  • Are a financial member of Maroubra Surf Club
  • Be at least 13 years of age on the date of assessment
  • Have reasonable, everyday English language, literacy and numeracy skills

Upon successful completion participants will be awarded the SLSA Radio Operators Certificate, and you will receive a nationally recognised statement of attainment for the unit of competency PUAOPE013 Operate communications systems and equipment.

Silver Medallion Patrol Captain Award

The Silver Medallion Patrol Captain award aims to equip participants with the skills and knowledge required to confidently manage a beach and a patrol as a Surf Life Saving Patrol Captain. This is award is required for all new Patrol Captains. 

Prerequisites include that you:

  • Are a financial member of Maroubra Surf Club
  • Be at least 17 years of age on the date of assessment
  • Hold and be proficient in the Bronze Medallion, or have held an SLSA Bronze Medallion and currently hold another patrolling award
  • Have 2 years patrolling experience.
  • Upon successful completion participants will be awarded the SLSA Silver Medallion Patrol Captain award.

Powercraft Awards

IRB Crew

This course will provide participants with the skills and knowledge to effectively crew an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) in surf rescue operations. Upon completion participants will receive an IRB Crew Certificate, and a nationally recognised statement of attainment for the following unit of competency:

  • PUASAR015 Crew small powercraft in a rescue operation

Prerequisites include that you:

  • Are a financial member of Maroubra Surf Club
  • Be at least 15 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • Hold and be currently proficient in the Bronze medallion

IRB Crew Certificate Syllabus 

Silver Medallion IRB Driver

The Silver Medallion IRB Driver provides participants with the skills and knowledge to effectively drive and manage an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) in surf rescue operations. Upon completion participants will receive a Silver Medallion IRB Driver award, and a nationally recognised statement of attainment for the following units of competency:

  • PUAEQU001 Prepare, maintain and test response equipment
  • PUASAR014 Operate and maintain a small powercraft and motor for rescue operations

Prerequisites include:

  • A financial member of Maroubra Surf Club
  • Be at least 16 years of age to commence training
  • Be at least 17 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • Hold and be currently proficient in:
    • Bronze medallion
    • IRB Crewperson Certificate
  • Meet local marine licensing requirements

Silver Medallion IRB Driver Syllabus 

Rescue Water Craft (RWC) Operator

This course will provide participants with advanced skills and knowledge to effectively drive and manage a Rescue Water Craft (RWC) in lifesaving operations.  Upon successful completion, participants will receive a nationally recognised statement of attainment for the following units of competency:

  • PUAEQU001 Prepare, maintain and test response equipment
  • PUASAR016 Operate and maintain a personal watercraft for rescue operations

Prerequisites include that you:

  • Are a financial member of an SLS Club
  • Be at least 17 years of age to commence training
  • Be at least 18 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • Hold and be proficient in the Bronze Medallion
  • Hold a current, valid vehicle license with tow capacity

Rescue Water Craft (RWC) Operator syllabus

Trainer, Assessor or Facilitator (TAF)

To become a Surf Life Saving endorsed Training Officer in any award you must complete the Training Officer Certificate (TOC). This award will equip you with the skills and knowledge required to professionally train SLS awards and nationally recognised units of competency using SLSA and SLSNSW resources, as well as follow the SLSNSW Member Training and Education Standard Operating Procedures.

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a nationally recognised statement of attainment for the following units of competency:

  • TAEDEL301 Provide work skill instructions
  • BSBCMM411 Make presentations

Prerequisites include that you:

  • Are a financial member of Maroubra Surf Club
  • Minimum Age of 16 years
  • Proficient in the SLS Award you wish to train
  • Meet suitability requirements
  • Commitment to:
    • maintaining your proficiency in the SLS award you wish to train
    • maintaining currency in the latest units of competency and/or qualification you wish to train
    • training at least one SLS award annually
    • participating in professional development activities for SLSNSW trainers

Course duration is a minimum of 6 weeks and the course is run by SLSNSW. This comprises of a new self-paced online learning modules, 2 virtual training sessions and 2 practical assessment tasks.

Once you are a trainer, you can do further training to become an Assessor or Facilitator.
