Through our Junior Development program of Surf Life Saving, we foster resilience, self -reliance, community spirit, teamwork, initiative and a sense of camaraderie to strike up friendships to last a life time.

Surf Lifesaving is a truly co-ed and inclusive organistation with a principal focus on respect for yourself and others.

Maroubra Nippers is an educationl program that teaches children aged 5 to 14 to be "Young Life Savers of The Future" where they will be taught a wide range of skills that will develop children in:

  • Surf Awareness
  • Surf Confidence and Skills
  • Rescue Skills
  • Life Saving Skills including First Aid & CPR
  • Competition in
    • Sand - Sprints, Flags, Distance and Relays
    • Water - Swim, Board, Multi-Discipline, Surfing and Team Events
    • Traditional Surf Life Saving Events - Champion Life Saver, March Past and  R&R
  • Communication Skills
  • Leadership, Teamwork and Inclusion

Our Nippers graduate as Under 14 as they progress through our Maroubra Rookie program and achieve their Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) with:

  • A Mind-set of being Safe in the water
  • Physical Skills to allow them to enjoy the surf
  • An Understanding for providing a service to the Community

Our success of our program is measured through the 40 plus Under 14 Nippers who graduate each year and become new Surf Life Savers protecting our beach.

Our Nipper program is usually held at Maroubra SLSC on Sunday mornings during the spring and summer period.

We usually open for online registrations in early August and conduct Preliminary Aquatic Evaluations for the younger children, and Proficiency Swims for the older ones in early September.

For those wanting to begin their surf life saving and/or compete at surf carnivals (including all water, all sand and all team events), they will need to complete Open Water Competition evaluation swims in October.

Our season usually begins on the first Sunday after the October Labour Day long weekend. Then it takes a break over the Christmas and New Year period, and resumes in late January, winding up with the State Championships in early March. Refer to our Weekly Schedule for further details
